VA Loan Desk Launches War Blog For War Veterans and Creates an Online Controversy
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 13, 2009 -- VA Loan Desk's WAR blogs is part of an all-out effort to support the troops returning from the IRAQ war and to generate an authentic representation of what it means for a soldier to fly to the other side of the planet to fight in a situation for which he or she may not have been prepped due to disclosure regulations for National Security purposes - only eventually to return home and attempt to rejoin civilian life. In this regard, VA Loan Desk's website is now giving the band of brothers and serviceman returning from violent tours of duty not only an outlet to tell their stories without any censorship or interference from political agendas but also to offer them practical support to rebuild their lives. The VA War blog is real and offers online readers from around the world a chance to get first-hand accounts of what it means to be on the front lines of war.
To this end, by streamlining these blogs from war veterans, VA Loan Desk aims to create a bridge for conversation across these new fault-lines and to understand better the capacities of different forms of storytelling to reach across boundaries and build connections at the human level.
The blog is accompanied by photos which make the wars currently being fought very real and take into consideration the human factor concerning what it means to have members from our own neighborhoods living with the fear of being captured or killed in battle and the impact that has on them when they return home. The blogs offer a glimpse into the lives of heroes who are putting their lives in danger for the freedom so many Americans embrace as a way of life.
Depicting unimaginable narratives of courageous soldiers with the pure scope of genuine examples of bravery, sacrifice, and perseverance under the most extraordinary circumstances, each post brings the war into the homes and laptops of curious browsers everywhere.
One such posted story delivers the bird's eye account of corporal Will Smith who was deployed to Somalia when he was to be married the following weekend. One can only imagine what it must have been like for a soldier to be called into action suddenly without even knowing the terrors that lay ahead. VA War Stories Blog allows the reader to actually experience the reality of the moment and the sort of thoughts that must have gone through Smith's head while the plane flew through the night to a far off strange land.
When they landed in Somalia, the unit was handed live ammunition. Smith reports that it was 95 degrees with high humidity. It was relatively quiet, but they could hear the faint sound of the Somalis screaming and chanting in the distance. Later that night, the corporal tells how he heard unexpected gunfire. "It was upsetting because we were told this was a humanitarian mission," Smith writes. "When you hear gunfire and are under strict orders not to fire unless fired upon it might be cause for stress."
The next morning Smith recounts how he and his unit were assigned security patrols to guard the convoys that were the supply lines for the humanitarian efforts for the Somalis. "Several times we were in light skirmishes and the AK-47 was the weapon of choice to be passed out by the Somali war lords."
Then Smith tells of one historic night in October when his unit was informed that two helicopters had been shot down. "We were told to assemble and prepare, and about 100 vehicles were ready," Smith writes. The two-mile long convoy consisted of 22 tanks, 40 Hummers, five-ton trucks, armored personnel carriers and air support from Black Hawks and Cobras. Smith reports that there were about 200 to 300 troops from the 10th Mountain Division and soldiers from Malaysia and Pakistan. There were two crash sites - one of which where Smith and his units were heading, a few miles from the original location of the crash. "On the way, I could hear gunfire and mortars," he notes. "There were many roadblocks that had to be cleared, and it was our job to do it.
Smith's blog describes how the Somalis were on the rooftops everywhere and shooting down at the soldiers. Though they had pretty good air support with what Smith refers to as "little birds with Gatling guns," the troops were still under fire and threatened from all sides.
"We got everyone we could and some had to run along side the trucks on the way back to the soccer stadium where we had created a base station. I made so many friends, and I guess when you live something that real, that vivid, those who were there with you become your friends for life."
While Smith's story may bring a tear to your eye, his courage and love for his country did not end in Somalia. Upon his return home to the United States, Smith found that there was little understanding or appreciation for what he and his fellow military friends had gone through.
"When I came back stateside, I saw that a lot of the veterans were homeless," Smith relates. "I started to do research on the web. I noticed there were no websites for veterans to get loans for a home. So I called an old friend, and he told me he had just started a website called VA Loan Desk and was interested in hearing my story."
This is just one of the blogs one might check out on VA Loan Desk's website. As anyone can imagine, the stories are tales of heroes and show bravery and courage like one can only read in comic books.
